Rain decimates third day’s play with Surrey
Only 21 deliveries were possible on the third day of this Vitality County Championship match between Lancashire and Surrey at Emirates Old Trafford as rain thwarted any attempts to progress a game that had sprung to life the previous evening.
Heavy overnight and early morning rain meant that the start of play was pushed back to 12.30pm, and the groundstaff must be commended on their efforts for achieving that target given the poor weather in recent days.
But after 15 minutes, in which Surrey advanced their overnight 11 without loss by a further four runs in reply to Lancashire’s 202 all out, rain forced the players from the field.
Further rain and strong gusting winds then prevented a restart with play eventually abandoned at 4pm.
With no play haven taken place on the first day, the prospects of a result look remote with just one day left to play.
