SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Barnard fifty holds up Glamorgan victory bid

SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Barnard fifty holds up Glamorgan victory bid

Charlie Barnard posted his best Second XI Championship score to hold up Glamorgan’s bid for victory on the third day at Abergavenny.

The left arm spinner had earlier taken three for 53 to help bowl the hosts out for 333. And he was soon needed with the bat after Lancashire collapsed to 13 for four in their reply before ending the day on 113 for nine and trailing by 220 runs, Barnard the only batter to score more than ten runs and making a second eleven career-best 57.

Both teams made changes at the start of play, Glamorgan bringing in Asim Hameed for Jamie McIlroy and Lancashire giving second team debuts to both wicketkeeper Finlay Richardson and right arm fast medium bowler Louis Backhouse with George Lavelle and Jack Blatherwick called into the first team squad at Blackpool.

Resuming the Glamorgan first innings on 140 for five, Asa Tribe and Tom Norton had taken their partnership to 44 before Norton edged an attacking drive off Josh Boyden to Harry Singh at gully for 29. Moments later Tribe completed the ten runs he needed to reach his half century from 102 balls but on 54 was beaten by a seaming delivery from James Dunn that hit the top of off stump to leave the hosts on 185 for seven.

An attacking 80 off 85 balls by Harry Podmore turned the innings around with the Glamorgan all-rounder finding good support, initially from Timm van der Gugten who made 9 out of a 40-run alliance before edging Barnard to second slip, followed by an excellent 54 from skipper Prem Sisodiya as the pair added 108 runs in 22 overs for the ninth wicket.

Having hit one six and eight fours Sissodiya departed after edging behind off Dunn, while Podmore was last out on the same score to a great tumbling catch by Dunn at long-on to give Barnard a third wicket with Glamorgan 333 all out.

The Lancashire reply began disastrously with four wickets falling inside the first nine overs.

Van der Gugten trapped both Singh and Gennaro Reddy lbw with just one run on the board, quickly followed by Boyden from an edge to third slip for 2 and Cian Dickinson caught behind for 3 to give Podmore two wickets.

Left hander Richardson was lbw to Ben Morris for 7, Haider Hussain turned Dan Douthwaite into the hands of Hameed at midwicket for 2 to leave Lancashire 35 for six before Barnard and Charlie Parkinson added 42 runs for the seventh wicket.

Pace bowler Hameed then struck three times in 21 deliveries, trapping  Parkinson lbw for 10, having Harry Birkman caught at first slip for 10 and dismissing Barnard, caught behind down the leg side, with his next ball to finish with 3 for 12.

Dunn (1 not out) and Louis Backhouse (10 not out) survived to reach the close, but the Red Rose second string will likely have to bat for the majority of the final day if they are to avoid defeat.
