SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Bruce hits 98 but Seconds lose at Barnsley

SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Bruce hits 98 but Seconds lose at Barnsley

Tom Bruce hit a rapid 98 but Lancashire lost their Second Eleven T20 Roses encounter with Yorkshire by 30 runs at Barnsley.

Noah Kelly pulled the fourth ball of the match from Jack Blatherwick to Harry Birkman at deep square leg, but Yorkshire shrugged off that setback by adding 86 in seven overs for the second wicket between Owen Smith (30 off 17 balls) and Yash Vagadia (54 off 25).

Charlie Barnard bowled both batters in the eighth over and James Dunn had Kyme Tahirkheli well caught by a sliding Josh Boyden at mid-off in the ninth to leave the hosts on 89 for four but that proved to be the last wicket to fall as Donovan Ferreira produced an astonishing assault during the remaining 11.2 overs.

The Yorkshire number five hit 114 off 51 balls including 9 sixes launched all around the Barnsley ground, plus 10 fours reaching his fifty from 25-balls and posting his century off just 46 deliveries.

Such was Ferreira’s dominance, partner Jordan Thompson only contributed 18 in an unbroken partnership of 149 runs from 68 balls that saw Yorkshire reach 238 for four from their 20 overs, by one run the highest total conceded by Lancashire in this competition.

Lancashire lost Sam Perry and Sav Perera with only four runs on the board at the start of their reply but a partnership of 40 off 17 balls between Bruce and George Lavelle got momentum into the innings before Lavelle was caught at long-on for 18 off spinner Vagadia.

Tom Aspinwall, back from injury, hit a six and 6 fours in a whirlwind 32 off 11 balls that included 20 in one Jay Singh over before driving Alex Wade to long-on in the seventh over, followed quickly by Blatherwick (9) and Moores (1)  to leave Lancashire 106 for six midway through the 10th over.

Bruce and Boyden (24 off 15 balls) added 39 for the seventh wicket but Wade returned to bowl two excellent overs (the 15th & 17th) that only went for 8 runs, to leave the Red Rose needing 75 off the last three overs and that proved decisive.

Bruce, who finished unbeaten on 98 off 50 balls (6 sixes, 7 fours) hit out to land four of his sixes over the closing overs but Lancashire finished well short of their target on 208 for eight and out of contention in the competition.
