SECOND XI MATCH REPORT: Lancashire win by 17 runs against Durham
Lancashire Second XI won a low-scoring contest against Durham Second XI by 17 runs in their second match of the Second Eleven T20 competition at Chester-le-Street CC.
Luke Wood top-scored with 48 of Lancashire’s 148 for seven, while Mitchell Stanley, James Dunn, and Steven Croft each took two wickets as the hosts could only muster 131 for eight in reply.
Following yesterday’s no result game, play got under way on time today but the Lancashire innings started poorly after Durham had won the toss.
Three wickets fell in the powerplay, Harry Singh (3), Cian Dickinson (4) and George Lavelle (6) departing to Mitch Killeen and Oliver Gibson with the Red Rose side 39 for three at the start of the fifth over.
Wood ended the sixth over strongly hammering Gibson for two straight sixes from the first five balls he faced and in partnership with Steven Croft fashioned a recovery with Croft hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours in making 33 off 22 balls before popping up a return catch to off spinner George Drissell.
Wood became the mainstay of the innings, adding 2 further sixes and a four in his 35-ball knock of 48 while wickets continued to fall at the other end.
Good support from Charlie Barnard who came to crease with Lancashire 83 for six at the start of the 12th over helped Wood add 44 important runs in 6 overs.
Once Wood slogged Gibson to Ross Whitfield at long off in the 18th over, Barnard took over the scoring driving Gibson for six at the start of the 20th over and finishing unbeaten on 30 from 27 balls with the visitors finishing their 20 overs on 148 for seven.
Durham lost Jon Bushnell for 8 caught by Dickinson at long-on off Harry Birkman but skipper Ben McKinney hit out effectively, slicing a six over the slips off Stanley and a more authentic drive for six off Barnard as the hosts reached the end of the 7th over well placed on 56 for two – Dunn having Ross Whitfield well caught for 6 by a tumbling Dickinson at mid-on.
And Dunn then struck again five balls later to bowl Haydon Mustard for 2 as Durham reached the halfway point on 74 for three needing 71 more runs.
Croft struck a big blow with the first ball of the 11th over when the left-handed McKinney holed out to Dickinson at long-off for 38 off just 23 balls, and that same combination accounted for Kileen (15) midway through the 15th over – Dickinson picking up his fourth catch of the match.
Once Haider Hussain had Callum Gaffney caught at midwicket for 27 and Stanley bowled Gibson for 1, the hosts reply faltered at 118 for seven with 31 required from 23 balls.
Stanley produced two excellent overs conceding just four runs and adding the wicket of Drissell as the Durham innings petered out finish 18 runs short of their target.
