SECOND XI REPORT: Lancs suffer double T20 defeat at Notts

SECOND XI REPORT: Lancs suffer double T20 defeat at Notts

Lancashire Second XI suffered double disappointment against Nottinghamshire in the T20 doubleheader at Worksop College.

The hosts won a thrilling first game off the last ball before enjoying a much more convincing 28 run victory in the second match.

Match 1: Notts win last ball thriller
Dane  Schadendorf and Freddie McCann steered Nottinghamshire to an exciting last-ball five-wicket victory in the opening game of this T20 doubleheader.

In a low scoring affair on a slow pitch, Nottinghamshire had a lot to do by the time they had reached 81 for four in the 15th over in pursuit of their 135 target.

A 32-run partnership in 3.3 overs between Haseeb Hameed and McCann brought the equation down to 22 runs required from 9 balls after Hameed had pulled Will Williams to Joe Moores at deep midwicket for a 41-ball innings of 36.

But Schadendorf (14 not out off 7 balls) hit a six and four as 16 runs came from the 19th over from George Balderson before the Nottinghamshire sixth wicket pair scrambled four from the first five balls of a good final over by Williams to bring the scores level.

McCann (24 not out off 17 balls) clipped the final delivery to midwicket for the single needed to clinch victory.

Earlier Lancashire had posted 134 for four from their 20 overs with skipper George Lavelle leading the way, hitting the only two sixes of the innings in his 36 off 26 balls.

Arav Shetty made 25 off 21 and Tom Bailey an unbeaten 21 off 18 as Lancashire added 79 runs in the second half of their innings after struggling against some accurate Nottinghamshire bowling in the first to be 55 for three by the start of the 11th over when George Bell was caught at long-on off spinner Liam Patterson-White for 26.

The Nottinghamshire top order found the early going just as difficult after Bailey and Balderson had reduced them to 33 for three after five overs. Hameed steadied the innings, but with 51 runs needed from five overs, the hosts looked to have possibly left themselves too much to do.

Hameed hit a six as 15 runs came off the 16th over from Shetty, but after the Nottinghamshire skipper departed next over,  Schadendorf stepped up with his decisive contribution.

Match 2: Notts enjoy convincing win

By contrast to the first match, Nottinghamshire romped to a 28-run victory in the second game.

Ben Slater teed off from the start, the opener hitting 2 sixes and 5 fours as Nottinghamshire raced to 53 for one off the powerplay with Slater having made 60 of the 108 runs scored by the time he slogged Charlie Barnard to Joe Moores at deep midwicket at the start of the 12th over.

That left the hosts 108 for three and it was the hero of the first match Dane Schadendorf who was chiefly responsible for getting Nottinghamshire to 148 all out with another quickfire innings of 48 off 32 balls that included 4 fours and 3 sixes.

Curiously no other batter reached double figures as wickets fell steadily in the second half of the innings with Tom Giles run out of the final ball and Barnard finishing with 3 for 26 with Will Williams and George Balderson each picking up two wickets apiece.

Lancashire made a disastrous start to their reply, losing early wickets to be 26 for four midway through the sixth over and then 47 for eight after 12 overs as all the Nottinghamshire bowlers enjoyed success with left arm spinner Fateh Singh the pick, taking three for 14 with some clever variations.

Barnard and Williams all but doubled that meagre score with a fighting 46 for the ninth wicket, Barnard hitting 30 off 19 balls and Williams making an unbeaten 38 off 25 balls as Lancashire finished well short on 120 for nine.
