SECOND XI REPORT: Six wickets for Barnard in drawn game at Edgbaston
Charlie Barnard took six wickets as Lancashire made Warwickshire follow-on at Edgbaston before this three-day Second XI Championship match ended as a draw with the hosts 75-0 in their second innings after being bowled out earlier for 267.
It was the second time that left arm spinner Barnard has taken six wickets in an innings for the Red Rose second team following his 6-42 against Yorkshire at Blackpool in 2022.
Lancashire had made 404-8 declared on the second day after the first day was lost to rain, with Rocky Flintoff confirmed today as the youngest player to have scored a Second XI Championship century for Lancashire at the age of 16 years and 16 days – beating the previous record of 16 years and 266 days held by Andrew Flintoff!
At the start of the day, Warwickshire resumed their first innings on 37-3, trailing by 367 runs, with Chris Benjamin and Sam Hain progressing steadily through the majority of the morning session in a 94-run partnership.
Benjamin was the more aggressive, becoming the third player in the match to reach his half century (off 59 balls) with a six, and he added another maximum and 7 fours before playing back to left arm spinner Barnard and bowled by a turning delivery for 74.
After reaching his fifty (from 97 balls) Hain was caught behind for 55 after nicking a flashing cut at Josh Boyden before the impressive Barnard added a further two wickets to his tally when Jake Lintoff drove to sub fielder James Dunn at short midwicket for 26 and George Maddy edged a back foot drive to wicketkeeper George Lavelle for 4 to leave Warwickshire 202-7.
Ismail Mohammed played down the wrong line to be bowled by an off spinner from Harry Singh for 35 and Barnard wrapped up the innings with two near identical dismissals as both Che Simmons on 4 and Tazeem Ali (15) got leading edges to sharply turning deliveries that were caught short extra cover.
With 34 overs left and Warwickshire trailing by 137 runs, Lancashire enforced the follow-on but the hosts eased through to the close without losing any wickets to seal the draw.
Lancashire gain 15 points, Warwickshire 11 points.
