SECOND XI REPORT: Yorks’ Luxton makes a half century on rain-shortened day
Yorkshire captain Will Luxton made an unbeaten half-century when the Second XI Championship match finally got underway at Headingley following yesterday’s washout.
But the poor weather, that has bedeviled matches up and down the country this month, returned after just 17.3 overs had been bowled before play was eventually abandoned for the day at 3.45pm.
Having won the toss, Wharton drove the second ball of the day for four and led from the front with a series of drives and pulls to accelerate quickly away, latching onto anything overpitched or short from the Red Rose attack.
James Wharton top-edged a pull off Josh Boyden that flew over fine leg for six, but the left-arm seamer struck when nipping a delivery back that Wharton inside edged onto his stumps after making 18 of the 48 runs scored in the first seven overs.
Luxton square cut Joe Chapple to register his 11th four and reach a 45-ball fifty and his 50 partnership with Matt Revis, who struck 7 fours, followed from 42 balls before rain ended the day early with Luxton on 62 and Revis on 31.
Close of play, day 2: Yorkshire 115-1 (17.3 overs) Luxton 62*, Revis 31*
