MATCH PREVIEW: Yorkshire v Lancashire, Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Yorkshire v Lancashire
Metro Bank One-Day Cup, Group B
Tuesday August 12, 2025, 11am
York Cricket Club, Clifton Park

Lancashire head to York for the second leg of a four-part road trip in a week, and they do so in buoyant mood having just beaten in-form Somerset at Taunton.

Yesterday, the Red Rose chased a 251-target to win by three wickets thanks to a fine 99-ball 95 from captain Marcus Harris and George Balderson’s well-paced 65.

They were just two of a number of significant contributions, including debutant all-rounder Arav Shetty’s 3-34 from 10 overs of spin as Somerset were limited to 250-7 from their 50 overs.

Shetty then chipped in with 18 with the bat, sharing a calming sixth-wicket partnership of 45 with Balderson from 180-6.

Lancashire face a Yorkshire side who have won their first two games.

The Red Rose have won the last two List A matches which have been played against the White Rose, dating back to the start of 2019. The two sides were duo to meet at Scarborough a couple of seasons ago, but the weather prevented a ball being bowled.

Opposition

Yorkshire have started this competition impressively as they aim for rare limited overs silverware.

The county haven’t won a short-form trophy since 2002 when they triumphed in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy. Their current head coach Anthony McGrath was in the team that day as a player, them beating Somerset in the final.

At the start of this Group B campaign, they have beaten Warwickshire at home and Northamptonshire away, the latter coming most recently at Wantage Road on Friday by 202 runs as they defended a target of 375.

Pakistani overseas opener Imam-Ul-Haq has starred in both wins. He hit a measured 55 as they chased 138 to beat the Bears on a tricky Scarborough pitch last Tuesday. Emerging new-ball seamer Ben Cliff took five wickets.

Against the Steelbacks, he hit a fine career best 159 in 374-5.

Yorkshire are captained by Dom Bess in this format.

Added to the star names of Bairstow, Brook, Malan, Rashid and Root, Yorkshire have only lost two players to Hundred duty in Jafer Chohan and Jordan Thompson.

Opposition player to watch

All-rounder Matthew Revis is enjoying one heck of a run of form with the bat through the middle of the season.

He has just hit three hundreds in as many Rothesay County Championship matches dating back until the start of July. Two those were 150 and 152 not out.

A middle-order batter, he also clobbered a career best 69 off 33 balls in their win at Northamptonshire on Friday.

A hit-the-pitch seamer with good pace, he also chips in with the odd wicket.

His hero is Lancashire legend Andrew Flintoff, and there’s certainly a bit of Fred in the way 23-year-old Revis plays the game.

Don’t be surprised if Flintoff is coaching Revis on England Lions duty in Australia this winter.

Previous meeting

These two sides were due to meet in this competition at Scarborough in 2023, but the game was abandoned without a ball bowled because of a wet outfield.

Previously, Lancashire beat Yorkshire at York in 2022, by seven wickets chasing 225.

Danny Lamb’s seam accounted for three wickets as Yorkshire were bowled out for 224, with Will Williams, Jack Blatherwick and Luke Wells all striking twice.

In reply, the Red Rose were indebted to an attacking 88 off 67 balls from opener Wells, while Josh Bohannon hit a well-paced 51 from number three. They shared 102 from 37-1 for the second wicket.

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar took a wicket with spin and hit an unbeaten 30.

Current interim head coach Steven Croft also hit an unbeaten 31.

The Red Rose were beaten finalists by Kent that season.

What they said

Steven Croft is relishing the prospect of facing Yorkshire at Clifton Park in front of a near 5,000 crowd.

The Red Rose won on their only previous visit to York, as aforementioned, in 2022.

“I’ve got fond memories of Lancashire wins over at Yorkshire,” said Croft.

“It was my first time at York for that game a few years ago, and I enjoyed that. They had a great crowd on, and it seemed like a really nice cricket club.

“Myself and the lads, we think outground cricket is brilliant.

“It’s great to get out and about and on the road to the different grounds, and we’re looking forward to going back to York.”

How’s Stat!

At 16 years and 269 days old, fast bowler Luke Hands became the third 16-year-old to play for Lancashire in List A cricket yesterday when he debuted against Somerset at Taunton.

He is the second youngest in List A cricket behind Rocky Flintoff, who was 16 years and 112 days old when he faced Kent at Blackpool last July.
