MATCH REPORT: Day Two v Yorkshire at Headingley

MATCH REPORT: Day Two v Yorkshire at Headingley

After Lancashire made 288 yesterday, it was Yorkshire’s turn to bat for the day and the hosts made 397 for eight, with Ollie Sutton taking three wickets for the Red Rose, to complete this two-day friendly ahead of the start of the Rothesay County Championship this Friday.

Adam Lyth and Fin Bean made a cautious start against Tom Bailey and Jack Blatherwick and it was the latter who made the breakthrough with 27 runs scored when Lyth drove to George Harris at midwicket after making 14.

That was the only wicket to fall in the morning session as Lancashire steadily rotated their pace attack of Bailey, Blatherwick, Mitch Stanley, Tom Aspinwall, Sutton and Josh Boyden to ensure all the bowlers had a run out with Stanley contributing a lively four-over spell and unlucky to have Bean dropped at second slip. Having had that reprieve Bean, along with James Wharton, scored freely in the second hour to reach lunch on 151-1 with Bean on 57 and Wharton an attacking 61 off 62 balls.

The Lancashire bowlers enjoyed a more fruitful afternoon led by three wickets for Sutton who first struck five overs after the break when trapping Bean lbw for 59. The left arm seamer then had Wharton caught at long-on for 98 with the Yorkshire batter attempting, but failing, to hit a third consecutive six and followed that with the wicket of Dawid Malan for 6 when the left handed batter edged to second slip, fishing at a ball outside off that left him off the pitch.

Aspinwall next claimed a brace, nipping one back between bat and pad to bowl George Hill for 8 and then took the wicket of Jonny Bairstow when the new Yorkshire skipper was beaten on the drive and lbw for 8. And 19-year-old seamer Hassan Mughal chipped in by bowling Will Luxton for 9 with Yorkshire 271-7 at tea.

In the final session Jonny Tattersall made 30 before glancing Bailey down the leg side to wicketkeeper George Bell, Harry Duke made an unbeaten 43 and Dom Bess an unbeaten 53 before both retired with the score 360-8 after 70 overs, and that allowed Will Luxton (27 not out) and Jordan Thompson (8 not out) 8 overs to bat before the players shook hands.
