Remembering Dickie Bird

Remembering Dickie Bird

The cricket world mourned the loss of one of its most legendary and much loved umpires, Dickie Bird at the age of 92. Everyone had a story about ‘Dickie’ and he was loved by the nation, even non-cricket lovers. When his autobiography was published it topped the best sellers for many weeks selling millions of copies.

He was loved by all at Old Trafford standing in many Test Matches at the ground. He was also involved in two of Lancashire’s most memorable matches.

At Buxton in June 1975 when snow stopped play, Dickie was the umpire complaining that “The snow was above his boots.” He also had to hold Ashley Harvey Walker’s false teeth when he came into bat. Dickie was there this year at the 50th year celebration at Buxton.

Lancashire welcomed Dickie back to Emirates Old Trafford in 2021 at the Anniversary dinner for the Gillette Cup semi-final in 1971 when David Hughes hit 24 from an over to win the match at 9pm (no floodlights). Dickie wasn’t happy with the encircling gloom but much to his credit didn’t take the players off.

He remained a constant presence at Headingley, where he paid for a balcony outside the dressing room for the players to sit and watch the game. Both the balcony and a clock at the ground bear his name.

A true legend, much loved by everyone. There will never be another Dickie Bird.
