SECOND XI REPORT: Barnard takes six wickets as Derbyshire edge to two-wicket victory

Six wickets by Charlie Barnard looked to be taking Lancashire to victory at Repton School before a half century by number 8 batter Nicholas Potts came to Derbyshire’s rescue as the home side prevailed by two wickets in an exciting finish.

Set 309 to win yesterday, Derbyshire resumed the day on 117-1 needing 192 more runs for victory.

But the hosts were quickly put on the back as Barnard started to work his way through the batting, starting when nightwatchman Will Rogers offered up a bat/pad catch to Kesh Fonseka at silly mid-off for 10.

Will Tarrant drove Barnard to mid-off for 53, home skipper Alex Thompson edged the left arm spinner behind for 8 and both Muhammed Bin Naeem (39) and George Lavelle (13) were lbw in quick succession just before lunch to leave Derbyshire struggling on 207-6 and 102 runs away from their target with Barnard having all taken six wickets.

Potts and Joseph Hawkins came to the hosts’ rescue after lunch, forging a match-clinching partnership of 85 across 20 overs.

Potts took charge hitting 3 sixes and 5 fours but both fell in quick succession with 17 runs required, Hawkins edging a drive off Jack Blatherwick to Harry Singh at second slip for 24 before some quick work by Singh, running from slip as the batsman hesitated over a single, ran out Potts for 55.

Sam Cliffe and Ben Aitchison brought the target down to eight runs required before Aitchison settled matters with a six and a four from consecutive Blatherwick deliveries.

Barnard's great effort ended with the spinner finishing with figures of 6-108 from 32 overs.
