SECOND XI REPORT: Blatherwick and Carney hit centuries against Notts

Jack Blatherwick and Jack Carney both made their first centuries for Lancashire as the Red Rose side responded strongly to Nottinghamshire’s first day total of 505-9 at Sale, reaching 444-7 by the time the players shook hands on the draw.

After Kesh Fonseka was caught off from leading edge to Dillon Pennington for 16, Harry Singh and Jack Lees built an 85-run partnership in 17 overs with Lees scoring a second half century after making 68 on Tuesday against the same opponents in a 50-over match.

This time the left-handed batter hit 10 fours, the last bringing up a 45-ball half century before he departed for 52 after edging Ben Martindale behind to wicketkeeper Dane Schadendorf.

Singh made 34 and Tom Aspinwall, making his way back from injury, 22 before both were out in quick succession to right arm seamer Travis Holland with Lancashire 147-4 at lunch.

Gennaro Reddy nicked behind off Tom Giles for 11 four overs into an afternoon session that was dominated by Blatherwick and Carney as the pair rattled up a mammoth 189 run partnership in 38 overs.

Blatherwick took 81 balls to reach his half century before accelerating his innings with the next fifty coming at a run a ball to take him to his first century outside of league cricket. The former Notts player hit 5 sixes and 12 fours before he was caught for 125 in spectacular fashion by a leaping Matt Montgomery at first slip off Sam Seecharan to end an entertaining knock.

Carney, having reached his fifty from 71 balls batted on through to the close, going to an excellent century from 137 balls with 14 fours and he remained unbeaten on 121.

George Harris added 25 and Josh Boyden 27 not out as Lancashire finished on 444-7.
