SECOND XI REPORT: Lancashire and Sussex level at Horsham

Half centuries from Harry Singh, George Bell, Arav Shetty and Charlie Barnard brought Lancashire to within three runs of the Sussex first innings total with off spinner Bertie Foreman taking a remarkable 9-105. The hosts closed on 55-2 in their second innings to lead by 58 runs.

Having lost Kesh Fonseka early for four, Singh and Bell built a 96-run partnership for the second wicket with Bell the first to reach fifty from 43 balls that included 9 fours. Singh followed to the same landmark off 68 balls having driven spinner Foreman for a straight six to go with 6 fours.

Bell swept Foreman to Frankie Cripps at backward square leg for 54 to become the first of the bowler’s ‘nine-for’. Singh followed for 61 after driving a catch back to the bowler.

Shetty and Tom Hartley rebuilt after lunch with a partnership of 74 runs for the fourth wicket, Shetty posting his fifty off 77 balls but losing partner Hartley for 33 to a catch behind from an attempted cut.

Foreman continued to work his way through the Red Rose line-up bowling Jack Blatherwick for 14, having both Joe Chapple and Rian Maisuria well caught for 2 and 3 respectively by Zach Lion-Cachet at bat/pad, and Ollie Sutton caught behind for 5.

When Shetty drove Foreman to Cripps at mid-on for 66, Lancashire were 251-9 with six wickets having fallen for 47 runs.

A last wicket partnership of 56 between Barnard and Will Williams took the visitors to within three runs of parity, Barnard hitting 8 fours in an unbeaten 52 while Williams made 11 before trapped lbw by the outstanding Foreman with Lancashire 307 all out.
