SECOND XI REPORT: Lancashire bowlers establish advantage at Headingley

SECOND XI REPORT: Lancashire bowlers establish advantage at Headingley

Lancashire’s bowlers fought hard to establish an advantage over Yorkshire on the second day of the four-day ‘Roses’ friendly at Headingley, having the hosts on 303-7 in their first innings and trailing by 109 runs.

The visitors could only add ten runs to their overnight position of 402-9 with Mitchell Stanley skying a catch to long-on to give Dan Moriarty his fifth wicket of the innings, the left-arm spinner finishing with 5-64. Ollie Sutton remained unbeaten on 76 in Lancashire’s 412 all out.

Jonny Tattersall and Noah Kelly responded with an opening stand of 50 in 15.4, ended when Tattersall edged a cut off left arm seamer Joe Chapple to wicketkeeper George Bell for 16.

Kelly had made 36 when he appeared to be caught in two minds when starting to play a shot off Will Williams before pulling out of the stroke a fraction too late with ball clipping the toe of the bat and deflecting onto leg stump.

That left Yorkshire on 72-2 but a good 101-run partnership inside 19 overs between Will Luxton and Harry Duke rebuilt the hosts’ innings with Luxton pulling Stanley for six over midwicket and hitting 13 fours.

The breakthrough Lancashire were looking for came from Chorley’s Miller Childs ten overs before tea when the left arm seamer’s angled delivery found an edge off Luxton that was eagerly snapped up by Bell behind the stumps for his maiden second team wicket.

Yorkshire rebuilt once more with Jawad Akhtar joining forces with Duke to add 84 for the fourth wicket into the evening with Duke moving on steadily towards three figures before he reverse swept Harry Singh to Kesh Fonseka at gully for 88 with Yorkshire 257-4.

That was one of four wickets to fall in the final session as Lancashire’s bowlers reaped some reward for their perseverance on a good wicket, Matt Milnes edging behind off Sutton for 31, as did Akhtar off Williams for 29 before Sutton bowled Charlie Taylor for 1 with a big inswinger in the last over of the day.
