SECOND XI REPORT: Lancashire lead by 161 runs against Glamorgan
A century by captain Will Smale anchored the Glamorgan innings on the second day of this three-day friendly at Aigburth. The visitors declared their first innings 93 runs behind with Lancashire 68 for one in their second innings and leading by 161 runs ahead of the final day.
Josh Boyden and Charlie Barnard extended their ninth wicket stand to 66 runs at the start of the day – the second-highest partnership of the innings – before left arm seamer Jamie McIlroy (4-70) had both caught behind for 20 and 35 respectively with Lancashire all out for 355.
Ed Byrom edged Ollie Sutton to Harry Singh at slip for 4 at the start of the Glamorgan reply but the visitors replied strongly with partnerships of 63 for the second wicket between Smale and Tom Bevan followed by 92 for the third between Smale and Billy Root.
Bevan edged behind for 36 off Mitchell Stanley just before lunch and Root was trapped lbw for 54 by Boyden midway through the day. When Alex Horton top edged a sweep off Singh to Kesh Fonseka at fine leg for 20 moments before tea, Glamorgan were 211 for four.
Smale completed a fine century from 135 balls (15 fours) after the break but departed for 120 when he reverse swept Arav Shetty – brought on when Singh picked up a hand injury mid-over – to Adnan Miakhel at gully, and when Henry Hurle holed out to Sutton at long-on off Charlie Barnard for 21 the visitors declared on 262 for six.
Lancashire lost Fonseka for 14 before the close with Sutton, opening instead of the injured Singh, unbeaten on 22 and Shetty 27 not out at stumps.
