SECOND XI REPORT: Lancashire win Roses T20 encounter by six wickets

Lancashire signed off on their T20 campaign with six wicket victory against Yorkshire at Westhoughton.

Harry Singh (37) and Arav Shetty (31) led the Red Rose run chase with victory clinched in the last over after the Lancashire attack had restricted Yorkshire to 128-7 in their 20 overs.

Singh and Kesh Fonseka rattled up 25 runs in the first three overs before Fonseka drove Ben Cliff to Noah Kelly at mid-off for 15 but George Bell helped maintain the early momentum as Lancashire ended the powerplay well-placed on 54-1.

Bell drove off spinner Ed Burch to Cliff for 11 at the start of the seventh over to end a stand of 31 off 20 balls and Lancashire continued to build good partnerships with Singh and Shetty reaching the ten over mark on 78-2 leaving 51 runs required.

Singh drove Matthew Firbank to Kelly at cover in the 11th over having hit 5 fours in his 32-ball 37, but Shetty and Jack Carney chipped away steadily at the target before the former was run out for 31 off 33 balls when 15 runs were needed off 14 balls.

Carney (18 not out) and Joe Chapple (13 not out) completed a well-judged run chase with four balls to spare, Chapple hitting the last ball of the 19th over for six before hitting the winning run from the second ball of the 20th over.

A 71-run partnership for the third wicket between Kelly and Harry Duke had taken the visitors to 115-2 by the start of the 18th over after they had been put in to bat with Mitch Stanley trapping  Owen Smith lbw for 5 and Charlie Barnard having Yash Vagadia caught sweeping at backward square leg for 17.

Kelly and Duke led a good recovery but Yorkshire hopes of adding significant late runs fell away once Duke, having made 32, top edged a pull off Stanley that went high to wicketkeeper Bell.

That began a fall of five wickets for 13 runs from the final 17 balls of the innings with Will Williams taking three in the final over, including that of Kelly for 53 off 49 balls to leave a 128-run target that Lancashire judged perfectly in their reply.
