SECOND XI REPORT: Leicestershire match abandoned as a draw

SECOND XI REPORT: Leicestershire match abandoned as a draw

The Second XI Championship match with Leicestershire at Loughborough Town C.C. has been abandoned as a draw due to rain.

No play has been possible since the first day with the Loughborough Town ground saturated after persistent, heavy rain.

Leicestershire had made 161-5 in their first innings from 47 overs on the opening day with opener Sheridon Gumbs unbeaten on 73.

The hosts lost two wickets for 37 runs after opting to bat, skipper Rishi Patel the first to go for 20 bowled by a seaming delivery from Charlie Parkinson and followed by Jonny Tattersall, the former Yorkshire wicketkeeper on loan prior to a permanent move next season, who edged behind off Josh Boyden for 1.

The first of seven stoppages arrived moments later, and it was Boyden who claimed the next wicket when play resumed, throwing down the stumps from midwicket to run out Jay Madan for 4 as the batters attempted a quick single.

Gumbs and Jamie Dunk rebuilt the innings in-between further stoppages with a 67-run partnership before Lowerhouse pace bowler Walker struck twice in the 43rd over.

Dunk pulled to Bootle’s Jaden Rose at backward square leg for 39 while Sam Wood played half forward but beaten by a nip-backer from Walker for 4.

Only four more overs proved possible before a combination of bad light and rain ended the day early and that also proved to be the end of the action with no further play on days 2, 3 and 4.

Lancashire gain 9 points, Leicestershire 8 points.

Lancashire are 24 points behind Group 1 leaders Gloucestershire who they play in their final Second XI Championship match at Blackpool C.C., starting next Tuesday 9 September at 10.30am.
