SECOND XI REPORT: Maisuria, Bell half centuries set challenging target in Roses match
Half centuries by Rian Maisuria and George Bell in a century partnership along with a 51-run stand for the tenth wicket between Mitch Stanley and Miller Childs have set Yorkshire a challenging 368 runs to win this Second XI ‘Roses’ friendly at Headingley. The hosts ended the third day on 36-0 and need a further 332 runs.
Lancashire’s bowlers made short work of the Yorkshire tail when play resumed with the hosts on 303-7 in their first innings, Will Williams snapping up two wickets to finish with 4-40 and Ollie Sutton (3-61) ending the innings with only 15 runs added to give the Red Rose side a first innings lead of 94 runs.
Having lost Harry Singh lbw to Matt Milnes for 14 at the start of their second innings, the Lancashire batters built on that lead steadily thanks to century partnership between Maisuria, drafted in for his second team debut at short notice, and Bell.
Maisuria mixed sound defence with a series of nicely timed drives off front and back to post an 89-ball half century when hitting the ninth of his ten boundaries. Having made 56, which proved to be the top score of the innings, the Academy player made a rare error when leaving a good delivery from Milnes that came back to clip the bails.
A buoyed Milnes (3-31) struck again next ball trapping Gennaro Reddy lbw while George Harris edged a wide delivery from Charlie Taylor to wicketkeeper Harry Duke for 8. When Bell, who made his second half century of the match, played on for 51 to Taylor (4-40), Yorkshire sensed an opportunity with the score 156-5 and the lead 250 runs.
They were held up by an innings of 36 by Williams before a further tumble of four wickets for 37 runs was halted by an excellent last wicket partnership of 51 between Stanley, who struck 5 fours in an unbeaten 37, and Childs who was out for 21 after hitting his wicket while fending off a short delivery from Bradley Sylvester with Lancashire 273 all out.
Chasing a target of 368 off a minimum of 107 overs, Yorkshire openers Noah Kelly (20 not out) and Jonny Tattersall (15 not out) successfully negotiated the 11 overs left to reach stumps on 36-0.
