SECOND XI REPORT: Singh half century heads Lancashire batting on first day at Liverpool
Lancashire second team skipper Harry Singh led from the front with an innings of 93 as the hosts made 327-8 on the opening day of this three-day friendly against Glamorgan at Aigburth.
Ben Morris was the pick of the Glamorgan attack, the seam bowler accounting for four of the top five in the Red Rose batting order to have the outstanding figures of 4-18 by early afternoon.
Lancashire started well after winning the toss with opening pair Singh and Kesh Fonseka compiling 57 before a double strike by Morris in the 19th over who had Fonseka caught behind for 27 and Rian Maisuria caught in the slips for 2.
Singh and Arav Shetty countered with the best partnership of the day adding 90 runs in 27 overs either side of lunch, Singh backing up his career-best 154 not out with a half century from 109 balls.
For the second time in the day, Morris hit back with a double strike in the 47th over trapping Shetty lbw for a good 45 and two balls later Ollie Sutton edged behind for a duck.
Jack Blatherwick hit a six and 7 fours in making 38 from 39 balls in a 64-run stand for the fifth wicket with Singh who was next bowled by left arm spinner Romano Franco seven runs short of a second consecutive ‘ton’.
Jack Carney and Joe Chapple were both out for 32 to left arm seamer Jamie McIlroy (2-47) to leave on Lancashire 282-8 as nobody in the batting line who made good starts up – bar Singh – went on to reach fifty.
Josh Boyden (22 not out) and Charlie Barnard (19 not out) added 45 runs for the ninth wicket during the final 9.2 overs of the day to give the Lancashire total a late boost.
