SECOND XI REPORT: Yorkshire squeeze home by three wickets in ‘Roses’ friendly.
A century by Jonny Tattersall along with an unbeaten 70 from Matt Milnes led Yorkshire to a narrow three-wicket victory in the four-day ‘Roses’ friendly at Headingley, despite three wickets for Harry Singh.
Resuming on 36-0 in pursuit of a further 332 runs on the final day, the Yorkshire run chase was founded on a succession of good partnerships; 84 for the first wicket between Tattersall and Noah Kelly, 92 for the second when Will Luxton joined Tattersall, and later 78 for the fifth between Harry Duke and Milnes that led a recovery following the fall of three wickets in quick succession.
Miller Childs made the initial breakthrough today when Kelly edged the left arm seamer to Mitch Stanley at gully for 31, but that was the only wicket to fall in the morning with Yorkshire reaching lunch nicely placed at 152-1.
Tattersall went to his century off 135 balls early in the afternoon session but edged an attempted cut off Josh Boyden to wicketkeeper George Bell for 101 moments later.
That was the first of three wickets to fall for 32 runs with Luxton nicely stumped by Bell off Singh for 40, and Jawad Akhtar mistiming a slog that went high to Stanley at long-off to give Singh a second wicket.
At that point the match was in the balance with the home side on 208-4, still needing another 160 runs but Duke and Milnes steadied the innings with an excellent partnership that ended on the last ball before tea when Duke, on 57, played back but received a delivery from Singh (3-82) that shot ankle-height onto his off stump.
With the post-tea target now down to 82 runs, early wickets were vital if Lancashire were to build on that breakthrough, and Will Williams soon trapped Jafer Chohan lbw for 12 to raise Red Rose hopes.
But they were thwarted by another good stand of 50 between Milnes and Charlie Taylor who steadily steered their side to the brink of victory before the latter edged Williams to Singh at second slip for 28 with just five runs needed.
It was left to Ed Burch to hit the winning runs as Yorkshire reached their target on 368-7 with 15 overs to spare to bring to an end four days of good, competitive second team action.
