In England’s first innings, MJK Smith also scored a century (100 exactly) but both he and the Lancashire player made low scores in England’s second innings, 9 and 14 respectively. The Indian spinner Subhash (‘Fergie’) Gupte was the bowler who got them both out.
In India’s second innings, Abbas Ali Baig retired hurt when he had scored 85, but he returned later to complete his century. It was his only century for India in the ten Tests he played. Pahlan (‘Polly’) Umrigar was one of India’s best batters of the era. He scored twelve 100s for India inhis59 Test matches.
England won the five-match 1959 Test series by 5-0.
