All-rounder Tom Aspinwall signed a rookie professional contract with Lancashire at the end of the 2022 summer and made his first-team debut the following campaign, indicating in his short run in the side that he could be one heck of a cricketer in the years to come.
Aspinwall, a seamer who bats in the lower order, was part of the England Under 19s squad which reached the World Cup final in the Caribbean in early 2022, taking seven wickets in six appearances with a best of 2-18.
He went to Sedbergh School, a cricketing education made famous because of Harry Brook’s stunning exploits on the international scene. Lancashire and England women’s star Mahika Gaur has been on the same production line.
Aspinwall - he will be 22 by the time the 2026 season starts - was born in Lancaster. He has played club cricket for Kendal and, at present, Newton-le-Willows.
He impressed in his first six Rothesay County Championship appearances throughout 2024, including taking seven wickets in the match as Lancashire beat Durham at Blackpool in mid-May. He claimed 5-41 in the first innings, taking three of the last four wickets to fall.
In all, he took 14 wickets in those six four-day appearances.
He terrorised Durham again a couple of weeks later with another career best.
That was 4-18 in the opening game of the Vitality Blast at Emirates Old Trafford as the visitors were bowled out for just 75 in a heavy defeat. That was Aspinwall’s first of five North Group appearances last summer.
He also played three Metro Bank One-Day Cup games and three times for Manchester Originals in the Hundred.
In 2025, he took 25 wickets in 15 first-team appearances across all formats, including a pair of four-wicket hauls. Both of those, ironically, came in Championship draws against Middlesex at Lord’s and Emirates Old Trafford.
Shortly after signing rookie pro terms with Lancashire, Aspinwall was part of the Junior Pakistan Super League competition in October 2022, playing for the Gujranwala Giants. That competition was introduced to showcase the best Under 19s players not just in Pakistan but around the world.
The 2023 summer was a bit of a mixed bag for the youngster, who is all action. He has extra pace with the ball and power to burn with the bat in hand.
He claimed 10 wickets in eight One-Day Cup matches, including a best of 4-52 in the August win over Middlesex at Lord’s. He also posted a top score of 47 in the quarter-final defeat against Gloucestershire at Bristol.
Unfortunately, just when he was looking to kick on and potentially debut in the Championship, he was ruled out of the rest of the summer with a back injury.
Aspinwall played Under 14s county cricket for Cumbria. He represented Durham’s Under 15s once before playing more regularly for Lancashire at that age and progressing through to the Red Rose Under 17s.
He made his second-team debut in 2020 and has bests of 5-19 and 79 not out to his name at that level.
He played in two Under 19s Ashes Tests against Australia in Brisbane in early 2023, claiming seven wickets in a 1-1 draw. He then claimed six wickets in a 2-1 ODI defeat.
Aspinwall has also played winter club cricket in Sydney in recent times.
