Laura Jackson’s Sunrise Climb for Sarcoidosis UK
Thunder Cricket’s Laura Jackson is set to take on a sunrise climb of The Old Man of Coniston, in order to raise funds for Sarcoidosis UK.
Sarcoidosis UK is a charity close to Laura's heart after mum, Lynn, was diagnosed with the rare condition three years ago.
Sarcoidosis is a rare condition that can occur in any organ in the body with the most common being the lungs. The condition develops lumps called granulomas which are made up of clusters of cells involved in inflammation which then prevents the organs performing correctly. The exact cause is unknown, but it's thought to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
The climb in the Lake District will take place on Sunday 27 February and Laura – who will be joined by her Thunder teammates walk - has set up a JustGiving page to raise funds for Sarcoidosis UK, you can visit the page by clicking here.
Speaking about the climb, Laura said: “This charity is close to my heart because my mum was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis of the heart three years ago at the age of 51. My mum's case is rare as only one in 50 patients with the condition have it affect them in their heart.
“We still don't know how this happened to my mum and as of now there is no cure. It is a tough pill to swallow as she used to be very sports minded and incredibly fit and healthy from which I believe I inherited my sporty background. Unfortunately, for now she is bed bound and rather un-well and suffering from the side effects of the medication she is on.
“I wanted to do something to help sufferers of Sarcoidosis, so I posted a message in the Thunder group chat asking if anyone would like to join me on a climb of The Old Man of Coniston and I was inundated with messages from players, coaches and staff saying they would join me. So far, I've had 30+ people respond!”
