Meg Lanning signs for Lancashire Thunder ahead of the 2026 Vitality Blast

Lancashire Cricket is delighted to announce that former Australia captain Meg Lanning has signed for Lancashire Thunder for the 2026 Vitality Blast, marking one of the most significant signings in the history of women’s county cricket.

A multiple-time World Cup winner and one of the most decorated captains in cricket, Lanning brings unparalleled experience and elite run-scoring pedigree to Emirates Old Trafford.

Lanning led Australia through one of the most dominant eras in international cricket, winning five of her seven World Cup titles as captain. She is the most successful captain in the history of cricket - male or female - in terms of ICC World Cup titles.

The 33-year-old retired from international cricket in 2023 as one of the most prolific batters the women’s game has produced. Across formats, she scored more than 17,000 runs for Australia, including over 8,000 runs in One-Day Internationals and more than 4,000 in T20 Internationals.

Lanning has also been a standout figure in domestic and franchise cricket around the world. She has represented Victoria and Melbourne Stars in Australia, captained the Stars and Delhi Capitals in franchise competitions, and excelled at the Women’s Premier League – where she is currently captain of UP Warriorz - and The Hundred where she will play for Manchester Super Giants this summer.

Speaking on signing for Lancashire Thunder, Meg Lanning said: “I’m really excited to be joining Lancashire Thunder for the 2026 Vitality Blast. The women’s game in England is moving quickly, and Lancashire is clearly committed to being at the forefront of that growth.

“The side brought home silverware in the 50-over and T20 cup competitions last season and it would be great to be part of replicating that in the Vitality Blast this year.

“I’m looking forward to arriving at Emirates Old Trafford in a few months’ time, contributing on the field, sharing experiences with the group, and helping the team in that push for success.”

David Thorley, Director of Women’s Cricket, commented: “This is a hugely significant signing for Lancashire Thunder, and for the county game as a whole.

“Meg is not only one of the finest batters of her generation, but one of the most influential leaders the women’s game has ever seen. Her record as Australia captain speaks for itself, and her presence will have an immediate and lasting impact on our squad and the Club.

“Signings like this send a clear message about where we want to go as a Club. We’re incredibly proud to welcome Meg to Lancashire Cricket and we can’t wait to watch her perform at Emirates Old Trafford this summer.”
