An Open Letter From Sir Clive Lloyd

An Open Letter From Sir Clive Lloyd

Sir Clive Lloyd shares an open letter to Lancashire Cricket Members and supporters:

Dear Member,

When I was asked to become President of Lancashire County Cricket Club by the CEO and previous President, I did not hesitate to say yes. I had no doubt about it. Lancashire County Cricket Club means the world to me as it has given me some of the best moments of my life and gave me my upward mobility. I therefore accepted the opportunity with great humility and pride.

I first played cricket in this county back in 1967 for Haslingden CC in the Lancashire League. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was very cold, windy and wet! I hadn't been that cold in my life. Standing there on that ground, I couldn't have imagined that I'd spend the next 18 years wearing the Red Rose, or that nearly 60 years later, I'd be writing to you like this.

Lancashire isn't just a cricket club to me. It's a place with real soul and my home away from home. When I first came to Lancashire at the age of 23, I was welcomed with opened arms which I won't forget. Lancashire is a heritage built by people who genuinely cared, with values that have lasted generations.

What excites me most isn’t looking back at the past, it’s the opportunity we now have in the future. Seeing young kids discovering the game for the first time, families making memories together at all formats of cricket that are played at our ground. We must strive to grow the County Championship and encourage family and friends to join us as members. Cricket is growing here and we want to continue that growth across the board.

It is my wish that the men’s team will be promoted to the First Division of the County Championship in the not-too-distant future and we remain a formidable force, as we were years ago. The men’s side has always been in the First Division, competing for trophies and it's my aim, in collaboration with the Board, Cricket Development Committee and coaching teams, to make this a reality. This refers to both our men’s and women’s teams.

The foundations of the Club are now in place. Whilst our men’s team continues to transition, our women’s team won the double last year. It was great to see the success of Lancashire Women in 2025 and long may that continue. The growth of women’s cricket has been incredible in recent times and we look forward to being one of the hosts for the Women’s T20 World Cup in Manchester this summer. The new ground at Farington which will support our pathway, and we’ve got thousands of children across the county playing the game.

My promise to you as, hopefully, your next President is simple. Cricket comes first.

The Board members put forward ahead of the upcoming Annual General Meeting will be strong custodians for our beloved Club, not just protecting the game in the modern era but growing the game to reach a new generation.

We all want to see successful Red Rose teams, and I know everyone at the Club is doing all they can to ensure exactly that. Someone like John Abrahams, who loves this game as deeply as I do. Experienced leaders who've operated at the very top level in what they do. Dame Sarah Storey - whose integrity, leadership, and elite sporting mind will be a huge asset to Lancashire. We are bringing together that cricket knowledge, with experienced Board members that are Lancashire supporters and care greatly for the Club.

I’ll be at the AGM on Monday 25 May. Please come and say hello if you're there. And before that, we've got a big County Championship game this weekend at Southport & Birkdale CC, followed by the start of the T20 competition.

With great warmth and Red Rose pride,

Sir Clive Lloyd
