Second XI confirmed as winners of the Championship

Lancashire Cricket’s Second XI have been crowned champions of their Second XI Championship.

The Red Rose have secured the title after their draw with Sussex at Horsham Cricket Club, finishing the campaign on 92 points. Not only did Lancashire top Group One, pipping Warwickshire to first place, but their points tally was the best in the country, securing them the Championship title.

Lancashire secured three wins out of five games in the Championship this season, all three of which were convincing victories.

The first, back in May, saw Dan Salpietro’s side hammer Northamptonshire by 332 runs. That was a game which saw a remarkable 373-run partnership between openers Harry Singh, who scored 172, and Keshana Fonseka, who hit 187, as the Red Rose secured the win.

A seven wicket win against Derbyshire in mid-June saw the Red Roise pick up their second win of the competition. A superb 122 by Tom Hartley, plus five first innings wickets for Ollie Sutton and four for Ben Walkden in the second innings, was enough to secure victory.

Most recently, Lancs overcame Group 1 runners up Warwickshire, with Arav Shetty hitting a sensational 172 and Jack Blatherwick picking up seven wickets in the match, in what proved to be a vital win on the road to the title.

This weeks’ draw against Sussex proved to be enough for Lancashire to secure the Championship, as they earned enough bonus points to finish top of the pile across the county.

A massive congratulations to Salpietro and all the players who have contributed to the Second XI winning the Championship this summer.
