George Balderson named Lancashire captain for Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Lancashire Cricket can announce that homegrown all-rounder George Balderson will captain the Club in this season's Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign.

Balderson, a graduate of the Lancashire’s Academy and product of Cheadle Hulme Cricket Club, will lead the Red Rose at first-team level for the first time. He has previously skippered the Second XI and England U19s at the 2020 U19 World Cup.

Since his first-team debut in 2020, the 25-year-old has become established as one of the key players for the Red Rose, making over 100 appearances across all formats.

Speaking on his appointment, George Balderson said: "It is an honour to be appointed as Lancashire's captain for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

"This Club means so much to me, having come through the Academy here, so to be given the opportunity to lead the side out this summer in the 50-over competition is special.

"I will give my absolute best in this role on and off the field and will lead the boys out with immense pride. We have an exciting squad filled with talent and can hopefully go far in the competition."

Lancashire has also confirmed the squad available, barring any late call-ups to The Hundred, to men's Head Coach Steven Croft ahead of this year’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Australian overseas player Marcus Harris will be available throughout the competition. Sir James Anderson will not feature, while Luke Wells and Ajeet Singh Dale remain absent with long-term injuries. Arav Shetty, who has been injured since the end of April, made his comeback for Lancashire Second XI this week against Essex.

Seven Lancashire players will be unavailable due to their participation in The Hundred: Tom Aspinwall, Jos Buttler, Tom Hartley, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Phil Salt and Luke Wood.

Rocky Flintoff and Joe Moores have been named in the England U19s squad for the second Youth Test, which starts on Friday 17 July at Hove.

Lancashire's squad for the Metro Bank One-Day Cup: George Balderson (captain), Tom Bailey, Charlie Barnard, George Bell, Jack Blatherwick, Josh Bohannon, Paul Coughlin, Rocky Flintoff, Kesh Fonseka, Marcus Harris, Matty Hurst, Keaton Jennings, Michael Jones, Joe Moores, Arav Shetty, Harry Singh, Mitchell Stanley, Ollie Sutton.

Lancashire's 50 over campaign gets underway against Surrey next Tuesday at Sedbergh School, with tickets available here.
