Lancashire to host commemorative lunch for Jim Laker
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Jim Laker’s extraordinary world record test match figures of 19-90 against Australia at Old Trafford.
In commemoration of the historic event, the Lancashire Cricket Foundation and the heritage team will host a lunch in honour of the anniversary. It will be on Thursday 23 July at 12:30pm in the 1864 Suite in the Emirates Old Trafford Pavilion.
The event is sponsored by the Heritage Lottery fund and also the Lancashire & Cheshire Cricket Society.

They will be reflecting on what is surely one of the most complete performances from a cricketer in test history. Laker tore through Australia’s batting line-up almost single-handedly, picking up nine wickets in the first innings and all 10 in the second.
The man who took that elusive 20th wicket was fellow spinner Tony Lock. He dismissed opening batter Jim Burke, the only player who wasn’t out to Laker twice in the match, very much an unwanted record.
Interestingly, Lancashire legend Brian Statham took the new ball in that match. Of course, he went wicketless but still bowled exceptionally well. Statham delivered 13 maidens in 23 overs across the match, conceding just 21 runs. He did take one catch though, that of Richie Benaud in the first innings.
But that game will always be remembered as Laker’s test. His extraordinary figures may never be beaten, and Emirates Old Trafford may never see a more extraordinary feat again.

It is fitting, that the commemorative lunch held to remember the event will be attended by Laker’s two daughters, Fiona and Angela. There will be a talk from author Stephen Chalke, who has previously written about the off spinner. Chalke will be reflecting on the man, the match and its place in cricket history.
To go alongside that, we will be showing the special filmstrip of Laker's achievement, edited by Robert Moseley, and Neil Robinson, the Lord’s Museum curator, will be bringing the two cricket balls used by Laker, along with other memorabilia.

We will have a special souvenir menu plus a copy of the 1956 scorecard for each guest, and a raffle with a variety of prizes. Copies of Vic Rigby's book "Laker's Match - 19 Wickets and The Ashes" will be on sale.
Tickets will cost £50, including a three-course meal. Places will be limited, so it is advised that you book quickly to avoid disappointment.
