Lancashire are chasing improvement with the bat as they bid to get their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign moving in the right direction after a sluggish start to the title defence.

Three defeats in four, the latest coming against Roses rivals Yorkshire at home last Saturday, the champions return to Emirates Old Trafford this weekend with a chance to put things right against a side they know well.

Hampshire (10.30am start) are the visitors in a repeat of last September’s final down in Southampton, one Lancashire won by four wickets chasing 289.

Unfortunately, they are without the centurion from that day, with opening batter Gaby Lewis having returned to Ireland because of injury. Head coach Chris Read and director of cricket David Thorley have been exploring the possibility of a short-term replacement signing.

In losing a trio of games so far, the Red Rose have struggled to put a full performance together. For example, against Yorkshire, they did well to bowl their visitors out for a total of 241 on a good batting pitch.

However, they then failed to chase with the bat.

“It was disappointing that nobody managed to get in, stay in and win the game for us,” said Read. “It was a really good pitch to bat on, and the batters all came back and said as much.

“We’ll do better against Hampshire.”

Hampshire are the early pace-setters in this season’s competition with three wins from four. They are sat on 15 points, one clear of a Surrey team who they beat last time out at the Utilita Bowl on Wednesday.

They won that game by 13 runs on the back of their 272-5 total which included 78 from opener Maia Bouchier and 81 from Abi Norgrove batting at number three.

Left-arm spinner Bex Tyson claimed three wickets in bowling Surrey out for 259, Hampshire surviving a brilliant lower middle-order 119 from England batter Danni Wyatt-Hodge. She helped recover the visitors from 81-6 but ultimately was left with too much to do.

Coached by former Essex batter Paul Prichard, they are captained by batting all-rounder Georgia Adams and have Australian leg-spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington as their overseas player.

Of Saturday’s game, Lancashire coach Read added: “We’re looking forward to it. It’s another opportunity for us to go out and play a good team and get some points on the board.

“It's been a bit disappointing after our first game at Durham, where we put in almost a complete performance, I thought. Since then, it's not gone anywhere near as well, and we've got work to do.

“We understand that, and we need to front up against Hampshire.

“It’s a long competition, and nothing gets decided before September. But, at the same time, we need to get this campaign back on track.”
