Lancashire head to Rugby School for the first time.
The One-Day Cup has reached its crunch stage.
This is the penultimate match of the group stages and the Red Rose are in the top three knockout places thanks to four wins in their previous six. The latest of those came against Gloucestershire at Emirates Old Trafford yesterday.
They chased 271 to win by four wickets, with Keaton Jennings top-scoring with 67 and captain George Balderson finishing things off with 56 not out.
Lancashire are third in the group on 16 points, one of three teams on the same tally. Leicestershire lead the way on 20. Nottinghamshire and Lancs have 16 and all have played six. Then comes Surrey on 16 from seven games.
Rugby School is a picturesque, leafy venue which was the birth place of rugby, invented by William Webb Ellis, who was a pupil at the venue. There is a plaque at the side of an adjoining rugby pitch to mark the fact.
Warwickshire, meanwhile, are out of the running having only won two of their six matches so far. They were beaten by group leaders Leicestershire away yesterday.
Opposition
Warwickshire just missed out on knockout qualification last year, finishing fourth in Group B, the same section as Lancashire.
They were beaten semi-finalists by eventual winners Glamorgan the season before.
While the Bears have been strong in the Rothesay County Championship this season and are only five points off leaders Nottinghamshire with six games remaining, they have struggled in limited overs cricket.
They failed to get out of the Central and West group in the Vitality Blast and, as aforementioned, have struggled in the One-Day Cup.
They are being captained by opening batter Rob Yates and do have plenty of experience, including the likes of Ed Barnard, Jordan Thompson and Dan Mousley dropping back into the side from The Hundred in recent games.
They have actually won two of their last three games, including beating Gloucestershire by six wickets chasing 272 at Rugby last Sunday.
Opposition player to watch
One-time England T20 international all-rounder George Garton has recently returned to action having suffered from a back stress fracture.
A genuine all-rounder at full fitness - a dangerous middle to lower order batter and a left-arm fast bowler - Garton is only playing as a batter at present. But with good effect.
Aged 30, Garton played one T20I against the West Indies in Barbados in 2022.
Batting at seven for the Bears in the ongoing campaign, he scored a superb 117 off 101 balls to help them recover from 93-5 to 282 all out in a narrow three-wicket defeat against Nottinghamshire at Welbeck last month.
He has totalled 184 runs in six matches to date.
Previous meeting
Hamza Shaikh made 75 and leg-spinner Tazeem Ali took 3 for 39 to help Warwickshire beat Lancashire by five wickets at Liverpool last August.
Having restricted the home side to 249-9 on a pitch that aided spin, Ed Barnard's side reached their target with 61 balls to spare, Kai Smith finishing on 45 not out having put on 77 with Shaikh.
Jack Blatherwick took a career-best 4-48 for the Red Rose.
Earlier, George Bell opened up with a top score of 46, one of four players who all posted scores in the forties.
Keshana Fonseka made 43, captain Marcus Harris 41 and Arav Shetty 40. Had one of those gone on to post a big score, Lancashire may well have been in business.
Unfortunately, though, it wasn’t to be.
What they said
By his own admission, things haven’t gone smoothly with the bat for George Balderson this summer.
So for him to hit a superb 56 not out off 35 balls in victory over Gloucestershire yesterday, finishing the match with a six, was a great thing to see.
Captain in this competition, Balderson said: “I’ve had a tough year with the bat so far.
“But I think, for me, I'm at my best when I'm just trying to score runs and not worry about what might go wrong.
“In that situation, Arav (Shetty, the pair shared an unbroken 90 from 183-6 chasing 271) was playing the mature knock, and that gave me the freedom to try and play a few shots.
“You never want the game to get too tight at the end or get into the last over. So the thinking was just to try and get it done as quick as possible once we've got that partnership going.”
On the possibility of knockout cricket, Balderson added: “We spoke at the start of this year about this being a comp that we really want to get to the latter stages and try and win.
“The last couple of years have been really disappointing.
“We've given ourselves a chance now to go into these next two games and qualify from the group.
“It's on everyone's mind. But we'll just put it to the back of our mind and just focus on the performance and try and go and win on Sunday and Tuesday (Somerset, Taunton).”

Lancashire have never played a first-team match at Rugby School, which has hosted nine Warwickshire One-Day Cup games since 2014.
This will be the 10th, while Kent also visit on Tuesday.
