Remembering John Heaton
Lancashire Cricket was saddened to learn of the passing of Vice-President John Heaton.
John played cricket for Radcliffe Cricket Club, where his claim to fame was sharing a 50-run partnership with Gary Sobers. John scored one!
He became actively involved in Lancashire schools cricket in 1966, latterly becoming an Under-15 selector. He took great joy in seeing some of the boys he selected go on to achieve national honours, and those players never forgot him. Michael Atherton, Sir James Anderson, Andrew Flintoff, Warren Hegg, John Crawley, Graham Lloyd and Ronnie Irani would always take the time to speak to him whenever they saw him.
In 1984, John became Secretary of the Lancashire Schools Cricket Association, which latterly became Lancashire Youth Cricket, a position he held for more than 30 years.
Upon his retirement, he was granted the honour of becoming a Vice-President of the County Club, something of which he was immensely proud.
John was a regular attendee at Emirates Old Trafford, watching cricket from the 1864 Suite and seeing many of the players he had earlier selected go on to represent Lancashire and England.
