SECOND XI REPORT: Hartley and Barnard hit centuries on the opening day against Yorkshire

Tom Hartley scored his second century while Charlie Barnard made his maiden hundred for the Second XI, the pair adding 180 for the seventh wicket, in the four-day friendly with Yorkshire at Southport & Birkdale Cricket Club with Lancashire declaring their first innings on 434-8.

Yorkshire had reached 33-0 in reply at stumps on this opening day with Will Luxton on 10 and  Will Bennison on 14.

After winning the toss, Red Rose skipper Hartley came to the crease with his side on 71-4 midway through the morning session after early wickets for Matthew Firbank and Subhaan Ali had reduced Lancashire to 48-3. Opener George Harris, who hit ten fours in making an attractive 55, became the fourth wicket to fall when edging a cut off George Lancaster.

Hartley and Joe Moores steadily rebuilt with a 108-run partnership inside 25 overs either side of lunch, Moores twice pulling Rizwan Ishfaq for six in the same over during his innings of 43, ended when the left-hand batter edged behind driving at Ishfaq. Ollie Sutton fell for 8 in similar style, his edge reaching Noah Kelly at slip off the same bowler to leave Lancashire 191-6.

Hartley, who went to his half century off 68 balls, started to accelerate as his alliance for the seventh wicket with Barnard began to flourish. The Red Rose all-rounder reached his century from 122 balls (13 fours) before hitting a six over long-on off Jawad Akhtar as he moved on to his 150 from 185 balls. His fine innings ended on 161 from a return catch to leg spinner Bennison who then bowled Tom Walker first ball.

Barnard pummelled two sixes himself in reaching his half century from 73 balls just before tea, and he added a third on his way to his first century that came from 128 balls. Two more sixes followed before the declaration arrived with Barnard unbeaten on 118 having added 63 off 49 balls for the ninth wicket with Haider Hussain (23 not out).
