Match Preview: Hampshire Hawks vs. Lancashire Thunder, Vitality Blast Women

Hampshire Hawks v Lancashire Thunder
Vitality Blast, Women
Sunday July 5, 2026, 11.30am
The Utilita Bowl, Southampton

Chris Read has described England Test newcomer Ellie Threlkeld as “one of the hardest working cricketers I’ve come across”.

After tomorrow’s Vitality Blast game against Hampshire Hawks at the Utilita Bowl, 11.30am, Thunder will farewell their talismanic captain for a week or so as she embarks on her first foray into international cricket.

Threlkeld, 27-years-old, has been selected in England’s squad for the one-off Test against India at Lord’s, which starts on Friday.

She was part of a winter training camp in South Africa as build-up to the ongoing T20 World Cup - England play in the final of that competition against Australia at Lord’s tomorrow - but this is a whole new ball game for the Rainford product.

Threlkeld is one of four Lancashire players in the Test squad, alongside Sophie Ecclestone, Emma Lamb and Grace Potts. The other three have been selected in senior squads.

Red Rose coach Read, a former England men’s international and fellow wicketkeeper-batter, said: “Ellie’s highly devoted to improving her game, both with the bat and the gloves.

“She's a really good person to work with, so I'm really pleased that she's been called up and recognised for what she's been doing for the best part of a decade now.”

Threlkeld recently reached 150 domestic professional appearances for all Lancashire teams since the start of the Kia Super League in 2016, and since then she has not missed a match. No one else in England has done the same.

“It’s an extraordinary achievement,” said Read. “Like I say, she's devoted to getting better and to improving herself day on day.”

On Threlkeld’s skill with the gloves and bat, Read said: “People will point to her being one of the most naturally gifted wicketkeepers in the country, but I think over the last few years she's got better technically.

“The technical aspect of those real gifted keepers might get overlooked somewhat. But she's spent a little bit of time just understanding her method and her technique, so it's more consistent now.

“And probably the biggest shift has been with her batting, really.

“To get identified by England, you have to be able to score runs, and she's recognised that and has really worked hard on her game to ensure she's capable in multi formats.

“We know she's a pretty calm head under pressure. I'm really pleased that she might get a go in the red-ball stuff because I think that game would really suit her skillset.

“Obviously it's a very strong team that she's got to get into.

“Amy Jones is obviously England’s number one choice, so who knows what's going to happen there. But it would be fantastic for Ellie, for her family, for all her supporters, which I know there are loads (if she was selected).”

Lancashire were beaten heavily at Durham last night and have thus been knocked out of Finals Day contention. They have lost seven of nine games so far, winning twice.

They now face a Hampshire side who are second in the table with five wins from eight games, only a point behind leaders Surrey with a game in hand and four to play.

Coached by former Essex men’s captain Paul Prichard, they are captained by batting all-rounder Georgia Adams, whose off-spin has accounted for 14 wickets this campaign. She is the joint second leading wicket-taker in the competition.

Hampshire beat Durham at the Utilita Bowl in their last game on Sunday by eight wickets chasing 129.

They also have Australian leg-spinning all-rounder Amanda-Jade Wellington as their overseas player.

Opposition player to watch

Hampshire’s England opener Maia Bouchier is having an impressive campaign.

Left out of the T20 World Cup squad by her former county coach Charlotte Edwards, Bouchier has scored three fifties in five Blast innings. She has totalled 278 runs and is one of the leading run-scorers in the competition.

The 27-year-old is enjoying a fine few weeks.

In a recent Metro Bank One-Day Cup match against Essex at Chelmsford, she hit a superb 136 not out.

In Hampshire’s win over Thunder at Blackpool last month, she opened up with 74 not out.

Previous meeting

Hampshire cruised to an eight-wicket victory in the aforementioned game at Stanley Park last month, with opening batter Maia Bouchier scoring an unbeaten 74.

Bouchier and Hampshire skipper Georgia Adams pair put on a second-wicket partnership of 114 runs to seal the win as the visitors successfully chased down a target of 131.

Australian star Meg Lanning had earlier scored 64, but her efforts were in vain as the hosts slumped to their fifth defeat from the opening six games.

Lancashire’s 130-7 was significantly short as Hampshire registered their third win of the competition.
